Carrying a handgun in New Jersey takes a permit to carry. The 2022 carry law dropped the old justifiable-need test and set objective standards instead. You must be 21, give four references who are not relatives, finish online, classroom and live-fire training, pay a $200 application fee and keep at least $300,000 of liability insurance while you carry. Permits run two years. Roughly two dozen categories of sensitive places stay off limits, among them schools, courthouses, parks, beaches, bars, casinos and health care sites.
