Pheasant and waterfowl shotguns for New Jersey

New Jersey has two very different bird seasons, and they suit two different shotguns. One is the stocked pheasant programme on the wildlife management areas, a walking game over cut fields and hedgerows. The other is Atlantic Flyway waterfowl on the Delaware, the bays and the coastal marsh, which is cold, wet and hard on equipment.

Stocked pheasant, 2026-27

Fish and Wildlife stocks pheasants on 25 wildlife management areas, on Fort Dix and in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. The northern list includes Clinton, Black River, Flatbrook, Pequest, Whittingham, Walpack and Berkshire Valley, which puts several within half an hour of High Bridge. The 2026-27 season on stocked areas runs November 7, 2026 to February 15, 2027, closed December 7 to 12 and December 16 for the deer seasons. Youth days come earlier, on October 31 and November 2 to 6, 2026.

Birds go out on rotating schedules from November 7, and the state planned 52,070 pheasants for the season. Anyone 16 or over who hunts or possesses pheasant on a stocked area needs a current pheasant and quail stamp as well as a hunting licence. Shooting hours are sunrise to half an hour after sunset, and the daily limit is two pheasants. Wild quail season is closed statewide; stocked quail hunting is limited to Peaslee and Greenwood Forest, with 5,500 birds each.

The pheasant gun

Stocked birds over a dog in a picked cornfield are a 25 to 35 yard proposition. A 12 or 20 gauge with 26 or 28 inch barrels, improved cylinder and modified, is all the gun anyone needs. A light over and under or a semi-auto both work; the argument that matters more is weight, because a stocked area walk covers miles of rough edge.

Loads: an ounce to an ounce and an eighth of 6 or 7.5 shot in 12 gauge, seven-eighths in 20, at moderate velocity. Remember the general rule that lead shot larger than number 4 fine shot is not allowed except when hunting deer, waterfowl, woodchuck, coyote or fox. Ruffed grouse season is closed statewide because of habitat loss, so the stocked areas and the woodcock flights are where the upland season really lives.

Waterfowl on the Flyway

New Jersey splits waterfowl into North, South and Coastal zones. For 2026-27 the proposed framework puts North Zone ducks on October 10 to 17, 2026 and November 14, 2026 to January 14, 2027; South Zone ducks on October 17 to 24 and November 21, 2026 to January 21, 2027; and the Coastal Zone from November 21, 2026 to January 29, 2027. Brant and Canada goose seasons sit inside those windows. Season dates go through a federal and state approval cycle each spring, so treat any dates you see as provisional and confirm the final migratory bird seasons before you plan a trip.

You need a hunting licence, a New Jersey waterfowl stamp, a federal duck stamp and HIP registration. Shotguns may not hold more than three shells, and non-toxic shot is mandatory. The Delaware River flats above and below Phillipsburg hold local birds, the Delaware Bay marshes at Mad Horse Creek, Heislerville and Egg Island are where the state's serious goose and black duck hunting happens, and Barnegat Bay carries brant and sea duck.

The duck gun

A 12 gauge 3 inch chamber semi-auto or pump with a synthetic stock and a corrosion resistant finish is the default for good reason. Steel shot needs more choke and more shot than lead did: modified is a sensible all-round choice, improved modified or full for pass shooting at geese. Buy a gun that will run dirty and cold, and clean the gas system after every salt marsh trip.

Loads: 3 inch steel 2s or BBs for geese, 2s or 3s for big ducks, 4s for teal and wood duck over decoys. Bismuth and tungsten blends cost far more and pattern like lead, which makes them worth it in a fixed choke older gun or a 20 gauge. Whatever you shoot, pattern it at 35 yards before the season rather than guessing.

Where to go from High Bridge

The northwest is upland country. Clinton Wildlife Management Area on Route 173 is fifteen minutes from the borough and carries both stocked pheasant and the closest public range, which makes a November morning easy to plan. Black River at Chester, Pequest at Oxford and Whittingham in Sussex are all inside an hour, and the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area stocking puts birds within reach of anyone who does not mind the drive up Route 206.

For water, the Delaware above and below Phillipsburg is the nearest real duck water to Hunterdon, and the Musconetcong and the South Branch hold a few local birds in a hard freeze. Anyone serious about geese ends up driving south to the bayshore.

Clothing, dogs and the small things

Stocked area hunting means orange. New Jersey has a daylight fluorescent orange requirement for small game hunting with a firearm, and the digest sets out exactly how much and where, so read it before the first walk. Carry more water than you think a dog needs in early November, and a chest waders bag for the marsh, because the difference between a good duck season and a miserable one is usually dry feet.

Two guns or one

Plenty of people do both seasons with one 12 gauge semi-auto and two chokes. If you shoot more upland than water, buy the lighter gun and accept a heavier recoil impulse with steel. If the marsh is the point, buy the tough one and carry it.
