New Jersey is a permit state. Every rifle or shotgun purchase needs a firearms purchaser identification card, and every handgun needs its own permit to purchase, both issued by the police chief of the town where you live or by the State Police where there is no full-time department. Only one handgun may be bought in any 30-day period. Since July 2022 applicants must show an approved safety course taken within the previous four years. The card costs $50 and each handgun permit $25. At the dealer you still sign Form 4473 and pass a background check. There is no separate state waiting period.

Carrying a handgun in New Jersey takes a permit to carry. The 2022 carry law dropped the old justifiable-need test and set objective standards instead. You must be 21, give four references who are not relatives, finish online, classroom and live-fire training, pay a $200 application fee and keep at least $300,000 of liability insurance while you carry. Permits run two years. Roughly two dozen categories of sensitive places stay off limits, among them schools, courthouses, parks, beaches, bars, casinos and health care sites. Parts of the law are still before the federal courts, so check the current rules before you carry.
New Jersey Fish and Wildlife sets deer seasons by deer management zone, grouped into High, Medium and Low regulation sets. For 2026-27 the six-day firearm season runs December 7 to 12, 2026, with a limit of two antlered deer. Permit muzzleloader and permit shotgun seasons stretch from late November into February in the High-set zones that cover most of the northwest. Rifles are not legal for deer here. You may use a shotgun from 20 to 10 gauge with slugs or buckshot, or a single-shot muzzleloader of .44 caliber or larger, and no shotgun may hold more than three shells.
Pigeon Swamp State Park and the Delaware and Raritan Canal corridor south of the city are listed in Deer Zone 14. Most Middlesex hunters drive to Assunpink in Monmouth or to the Pine Barrens zones below Route 195.
Rutgers farmland, the Delaware and Raritan towpath and Pigeon Swamp State Park give the city its only nearby green, and the state ranges at Assunpink and Colliers Mills are the usual weekend drive.
New Jersey Fish and Wildlife runs free shooting ranges on wildlife management areas in every region of the state. At least one person in your party must carry a current New Jersey hunting license, handguns are not allowed on these ranges, and centerfire rifles are permitted only at the Clinton, Flatbrook, Colliers Mills, Stafford Forge and Millville ranges.
